 Melanin Magic: Amazing things You Didn’t Know

Any black person that feels like their beauty is not good enough, has clearly been misinformed. the melanin in the black skin is like magic and should be cherished. Everyone has melanin, both light and dark skinned individuals. Melanin is a broad term for a group of natural pigment found in most organisms. It is the primary determinant of skin color.

You might have heard the phrase ‘melanin magic’ or ‘black is gold’ or ‘black is beautiful’ but you don’t know where all these popular phrases come from and why people refer to black skin that way. Well, the answer is simple, it is because of the priceless benefits the black skin has that the white skin don’t have.

Melanin magic is more than a phrase; it is a movement that should be embraced by all skin types because it Is truly magical. Here are the benefits of melanin;

Helps black people age slower

Black women greatly benefit from melanin because it prevents them from ageing as quickly as other groups. A study show that black women skin typically ages about ten years slower than white women’s skin. Here’s why; Human skin has three layers, the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. Melanocytes in the epidermis produce melanin (a natural skin pigment). Melanin blocks UV rays which can accelerate the aging process, black men and women produces more melanin in their skin, which results in darker pigment.

The more melanin in your skin, the more protection you have against the harsh effect of sun exposure. Too much exposure to UV rays can cause skin to age quicker resulting in wrinkles and sun spots. Since white women produce less melanin, they can show signs of aging faster. This doesn’t mean that black women don’t experience skin aging, it just happens at a slower rate.

Protective Function

Sun exposure can cause skin damage and even skin cancer. The ability to withstand the damaging effect of UV rays depends on the amount of melanin in our skin, which is determined by the amount of active melanocytes in the epidermis.

Even in very light-skinned people, the body’s melanocytes respond to UV exposure by producing more melanin, which creates the effect known as tanning (tanning is the act of exposing your skin to sun light in order to achieve a darker skin). None the less, there is a limit to the level of protection that melanin can provide, and its way higher in people with natural dark skin.

Protects the eyes from macular degeneration

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people above the age of 60. As we all know, the melanin pigment is found throughout the body and acts like a neutralizing sponge in the retina cells that soaks up and destroy reactive oxygen species. These oxygen species play a major role in causing macular degeneration.

Other benefits;

  • Human reproduction: Black skin help prevent folate depletion. Women need folate for healthy eggs and normal development of babies. Black skinned women suffer the lowest level of neural tube defects (birth defect that affect the brain and spinal cord)
  • Protects from hearing loss: Melanin plays a role in how our body removes harmful chemical compounds caused by damage to the sensitive hair cells in the inner ear.
  • Studies shows that melanin may contribute to the reduction of inflammation, preventing liver injuries.

It is clear that melanin is of great benefit to us and we should always appreciate black people because black is gold! To help you increase your melanin level, eat foods that are high in antioxidants, foods like – garlic, cinnamon, red chili, bay leaf, and pomegranate.

Final thoughts

The more melanin you have the more beneficial it is to your being and body. This means ‘the darker, the better’ so don’t let anybody tell you or make you feel you’re not beautiful because your skin is gold.

There are a lot of people who want to lighten their skin because of racial abuse. Their peers make them feel ugly and less human because of their dark skin and they become pressured to lighten their skin. It is only an ignorant person that will want to do that. Your black skin is just as beautiful than any other skin type and you should wear it with pride and feel confident in it.
